Pros and Cons of Frameless Shower Doors

When you are in the market to remodel your bathroom, choosing to install a frameless shower unit is a stylish way to add a modern upgrade to your personal space. This style has several significant benefits and disadvantages:

        Pros

        1. Cleanliness

An advantage of a door without a frame is that it’s much less difficult to clean. You’ll save time and spend less cash on cleaning supplies. On the other hand, a framed unit may eventually rust, corrode or grow mold under its seals.

        2. Appearance

Another benefit involves the stylish look of a frameless door. The lack of metal and rubber gives it a modern, sleek appearance. This elegant design holds the greatest appeal for homeowners who favor minimalist styles. It provides a better view of any tiles as well.

        3. Customization

Unlike framed glass units, these doors are precisely cut to the desired size. This makes them suitable for a wider range of bathrooms and showers. The ability to select a specific size allows you to customize the entire bathroom more thoroughly.

        4. Illumination

A lack of framing permits more light to reach the inside of a shower stall. All glass doors block much less light than shower curtains and liners. Consequently, you won’t need as many light fixtures or windows to gain adequate illumination.

        Cons

        1. Expense

A downside of frameless products is their cost. Like any custom product, they have higher prices than standardized units. Thicker glass and heavy-duty hardware add to the expense. These doors often cost at least $400 extra, and you might spend up to $1,150 more.

        2. Sealing

Frameless shower doors don’t seal shut against the wall. The glass also doesn’t have as much protection from accidental damage. This increases the likelihood of water leakage that may harm your bathroom floor. Precise installation and proper shower head placement reduce this risk.

Regardless of how you feel about these pros and cons, Glass and Mirror Outlet can install a framed, semi-framed or frameless door that truly meets your needs. Please contact our friendly staff in Hopkins, Minnesota for further details or a free estimate.

        Tempered Glass
          November 22, 2017

          Why Choose Tempered Glass?

Glass is just that, glass, isn’t it? Well, it isn’t always that simple. There are many varieties of glass, including tempered glass, that serve different purposes in your home or business. As a matter of fact, if you’re reading this article on a smart phone you’re probably using an item made of tempered glass right now.

What is tempered glass? Tempered glass, also referred to as safety glass, is a special kind of glass that is made to resist shattering. The glass is passed from a thermal process that makes it heat resistant and adds more durability to the glass. This process makes the glass five to ten times stronger than other types of glass.

          Safety
The most important benefit of tempered glass is safety. Tempered glass reduces the risk of injury due to its nature of breaking into small, circular pieces instead of sharp, jagged shards. Another benefit of tempered glass is its strength. Because the process of heating and applying chemicals strengthens the glass, tempered glass is an excellent choice for windshields, home windows and iPhones.

          Home Uses
Perhaps the most common appliances that use tempered glass are the microwave oven and the traditional baking oven. It is also ideal for refrigerator shelving, which must be able to bear a great deal of weight. Tempered glass is becoming increasingly popular in home windows as well because of its safety feature should it be broken.

Tempered glass is a smart choice in your home due to its benefits. This glass is much stronger and far more resistant to breakage than regular glass. Also, because it is highly durable, it will last a lot longer than regular glass. To find out more about tempered glass in Minneapolis, call us at 952-933-3223.

Creative Ways to Use Glass in Your Home

The glass in your home doesn’t have to only be for shower doors and traditional windows. You can get creative with glass in order to truly customize your home, making it into the perfect space for you.

Think outside the box and incorporate some of these custom glass ideas into your home renovation or when building a new home.

Glass Tabletops – Sleek and modern, a glass dining table, coffee table, sofa table or end tables give the space a clean and polished look. Because of their transparency, they leave a room feeling spacious and airy and not overly cluttered with large, chunky furnishings.

Kitchen Cabinets – Who says kitchen cabinets can’t be fun? Mix glass doors with traditional cabinet doors for a one-of-a-kind kitchen design.

Glass Shelving – Create custom wall shelving to display your home decor in the living room, as a bookshelf in your home office, or as linen shelving in your master bathroom.

Textured Glass – Allow natural light to flow into your home around your front door while still maintaining your privacy. Stained glass, decorative glass and privacy glass are creative ways to allow light into your entryway while making a statement with a custom design.

When you’re looking for custom glass installation, contact the experienced custom glass store team at Glass and Mirror Outlet. Our staff will help you with pieces for your living room, foyer, dining room, bathroom, and every other room in your home.

Walk-In Shower Ideas for Your Bathroom Remodel

When it comes to bathrooms, we all want the same things – comfort, convenience and a little bit of luxury. After all, besides the heart of the home, the kitchen, and your bedroom, the bathroom is the other room in the house that you spend lots of time. Because you spend so much time there, it should have all of the luxuries and features that make it your own personal oasis from the outside world.

So what’s priority number one for a lux bathroom remodel – a walk-in shower, of course. There are many varieties to choose from in order to find the right style for your aesthetic, as well as your bathroom’s space. Walk-in showers are elegant and functional for any bathroom, so it just comes down to choosing which look gives you the most chic vibes.

First off, glass-enclosed showers make for your own personal spa at home. Create an airy, seamless look using glass shower walls, which let light filter in and a smooth transition throughout your bathroom.

If you’ve got a small bathroom you’ll want to focus on function and space. However, for a master bathroom with ample room, you’ll want to focus on comfort and style! Here are some top walk-in shower design ideas to get you inspired.

Shower and Steam Room Combo: Create your own private spa with a combination walk-in shower and steam room. You’ll reap the rewards while saving the space. Just incorporate a bench into your shower to enjoy your steam spa.

Doorless Glass Shower: Add a wooden floor and rain shower to complete this chic shower look.

Half-wall Shower: For a small bathroom, a half-wall shower is perfect. It still allows for that open-airy space, but without taking up too much room.

Glass walk-in showers give your bathroom a modern and fresh look and efficiently use the space that you have. Get started on your bathroom overhaul today with shower doors in Minneapolis. No matter what style you choose, Glass & Mirror Outlet will have the perfect glass design to make it happen.

                  A Short History of Showers

From ancient Egypt to today, showers have had a long and interesting past. Today, we have wonderful hot showers with distinctive styles, but it always hasn’t been that way!

One of the earliest examples of showers has been found in Ancient Egypt. In these times, servants would poor water over the head of their masters as they bathed. Fast forward to Ancient Greece and you’ll find what is more or less the modern shower. In these times, there were public showers with plumbing and shower heads – the only difference is the showers would usually be ice cold. Cold showers were the norm for most people until the late 19th century, when Benjamin Waddy Maughan patented the first residential water heater. As homes slowly started to get indoor water throughout the 20th century, most Americans began taking warm showers, as it was shown to be more hygienic than cold showers.

When you are looking for a new glass shower, you can trust the team at the Glass and Mirror Outlet. Not only do we offer great glass shower options, we also provide custom glass cutting in Minneapolis services for other home design elements! • Raise Your Property Value – Whether you are dedicated to taking care of your home or planning on selling the property in the near future, a glass shower is sure to increase the value of your home. When a buyer sees that your home has a glass shower in it, it may be that extra something special that makes the house the home they must have!
                    • Update Your Bathrooms – Let’s admit it – bathrooms are some of the most utilitarian parts of the home. Easy Ways to Keep Your Shower Glass Clean

Do you have trouble keeping your glass shower enclosures clean? Here are a handful of simple ways you can keep your shower glass clean:

                      • A Squeegee – It may take a little extra time out of your day, but using a squeegee every day is perhaps the most effective, as well as affordable, way to keep your shower looking spotless. All you have to do is make sure that everyone in the house is dedicated to this new habit. If they miss a day, then you will start to see spots!
                      • Dryer Sheets – Anyone who cleans their home regularly knows that a dryer sheet, one of the most versatile cleaning products out there, is perfect for cleaning your shower. The ingredients that are used in these sheets can help soften dried soap on your glass, making it easier to get it off the doors and keep things clean.

From new shower enclosures to glass repair in Minneapolis, the team at the Glass and Mirror Outlet is here to help you with your glass needs. We provide unparalleled installations and repairs in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the surrounding communities!
